How iPhone setup works
Apple’s current guide places Vehicle Motion Cues under Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Users can choose on, off, or automatic and can also expose the control in Control Centre. Appearance controls include Regular or Dynamic patterns, colour, larger dots, and more dots.
With Automatic, cues appear when the iPhone detects that the passenger is riding in a car or another on-road vehicle and hide when movement stops. Apple explicitly says the feature must not be used while operating a moving vehicle or when safety requires attention.
What to check first on Android
Android feature names and availability can vary with the manufacturer and software rollout. Search the current device settings for motion cues, vehicle motion, or related accessibility terms before installing another tool. A missing menu does not mean the phone lacks motion sensors.
Mulmi uses Android’s SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW permission to display non-touchable dots above other apps. The user grants that permission manually. The overlay does not read the underlying screen or intercept its controls.
Why Mulmi asks the passenger before starting
Optional ride detection subscribes to IN_VEHICLE enter and exit transitions through Android Activity Recognition. It does not automatically start the overlay. Instead, it sends a fixed passenger-only notification and waits for a tap. Only a session started from that notification can stop automatically after vehicle exit.
This avoids surprising a driver with an unintended visual effect. If permission is declined or Google Play services is unavailable, the Quick Settings tile and widget remain available.
What was checked on a Galaxy
On a Samsung SM-S931N running Android 16, Mulmi remained visible above Calculator while touches passed through to the app underneath. Quick Settings start and stop, live profile changes, and the permission-declined fallback were also verified.
Which option should a passenger try
- On iPhone, start with the built-in setting if it is available.
- On Android, compare an app overlay when no consistent built-in menu appears or when profiles and a widget are useful.
- Configure either option before the vehicle moves and use it only as a passenger.
- Stop both the screen and the cues if discomfort increases.
